Leg Warmers

Super cute legwarmers with shell edging detail!  These are so fun to wear and they are WARM!  Ha ha!  The weather has been a little kooky lately.  Just 2 weeks ago we were running the A/C and then one morning we just woke up and needed the heater on!  No in-between (otherwise known as "autumn" or "fall"), straight from hot to cold.  Now, YOU need a pair of legwarmers!!

This project didn't take me long at all.  You could easily whip these up while watching a movie... like I did.  ;)

Check it out! We've been featured on Social Salutations: Friday, I'm in Love!

Super Cute, Fun & Easy Leg Warmers

Materials needed:
*H hook
*Red Heart Super Saver yarn in Coffee
*Coordinating buttons - I used 6, 3 on each legwarmer.  This could be cute with one button in each shell, going all the way down...  or even without buttons!  It's up to you!

Stitches Used:
ch=chain
DC=double crochet
SC=single crochet
Sl st=slip stitch

Ch 47
R1: DC in 3rd ch from hook and each ch across.  Ch 2, turn.
R2-22: DC in each stitch across.  Ch 2, turn.
R23: DC in each stitch across.  Turn work.
R24: 5 DC in 2nd stitch (shell).  *Skip 2 stitches, SC, Skip 1 stitch, 5 DC in stitch (shell).* Repeat *-* to end of last shell. (9 shells made).  Sl st in last stitch.  Tie off & weave in ends.

Repeat to make second leg warmer.

  1. these are really sweet! Are the buttons used to close the warmer, or are they stitched closed along the side and pulled on over the feet?

    ReplyDelete
  2. Thanks! The buttons are just for show. :) the entire side seam is stitched up and you just pull them on over the foot. Be sure to leave a comment on the giveaway post for a chance to win a pair for free!

    3. I am going to apologize for others that can't say something nice, if really bothers me for nice people like you to post a pattern free then have others make negative comments. I don't think it is necessary to place that the warmers are to be pulled over the foot because if you look and read the pattern you can tell that. I want to thank you so much for a wonderful FREE pattern. I appreciate your thoughtfulness and the time you put into writing and posting the pattern.

    5. I was glad Tez asked the question, Penny. There's nothing in the instructions noting that the seam is stitched so I wondered the same thing. Thank you for clarifying, Design Adventures! They are very cute.

    2. It would be a decent common courtesy to credit the person you got the pattern from, since you aren't creative enough to come up with your own designs.

  13. There are lots of ways you can assemble these. I simply sewed up the seam with a yarn needle and yarn, then added the buttons for fun. You could also see buttons on and use them to actually button the entire leg up, using stitches as buttonholes. Or do a bit of both! The fun thing about these is how creative you can get!

  18. OK, I need a basic pattern for a 10 yr old girl. This pattern is great and I want to do a couple of pairs for my grand daughters and also maybe3 for my daughter and 2 daughters-in-law. I can use the sizing for the adults, but how many stitches for a child's size 10?

    ReplyDelete
  19. One of the great things about these legwarmers is that they are totally customizable to any size! The beginning chains will determine the height of the legwarmers.

I don't have a 10 year old girl to test the sizing, but I have made these in all sizes from toddler to adult. The easiest way I have found is to simply make a length of chains to fit from the ankle to the knee of the person you are making the legwarmers for.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I remember when leg warmers were "in" years ago. So glad to see them back! I love this design and even though the buttons are for decoration, they just add such a cute touch.

  22. I stumbled upon your blog when I was looking for legwarmer pattern, love it so much, thank you for sharing. I wanted to get a pair of knee-high boots but couldn't find one that I like, when I saw this pattern it just crossed my mind that I can wear my ankle boot with this legwarmers and it would look just as good as a knee-high boot, what's more important is that I don't have to spend on another pair of boots. Cool, right? LOL.
I have "pin" it on my Pinterest board so it can be shared with Pinteresters as there aren't many legwarmers patterns on the Pinterest board. I hope you won't mind me doing that. Just let me know if u want me to remove it from the Pinterest board.

  24. Is there a way I could make these a little smaller for my grand daughter? She wears uniforms to school and I think a pair of these would be great for her!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Leialoha, I plan on writing a smaller version in the near future, but haven't gotten to it yet. Basically, you would make less chains in your foundation (to make them shorter), and make less rows (to make them for smaller legs).

    ReplyDelete
  26. I just pinned this going to make for my daughter...thanks for sharing

  27. Love this, but totally lost on how to stitch it? Does your scalloped edge overlap the straight edge?

  31. I'm very new to crocheting but I'm giving these a try. I was taught that in DC, you're supposed to Ch up 3 but your pattern calls for only 2 chains at the end of each row. Is there a reason for that, is it part of the design? I thought it might keep them in place on your leg better.I'm on row 12 and it seems to be working fine, just wondering

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It is actually usually two chains in DC... Three would likely cause you some problems in some patterns, as those two chains normally count as the first DC and a third chain would actually be like 1 DC, chain 1... Does that make sense?

      Delete
  32. I love the way these look! However, I refuse to wear high heels. Would these look good without heels?

Also, how do you join the two sides?

    ReplyDelete
  33. I am lost trying to join the two sides, can you help me?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You'll fold the legwarmer "hot dog style" with the long ends (one with shell stitching) together. Sew along this edge, either tacking down the shells or sewing through the last row of DC, leaving the shells as more of an edging.

  37. I just made the first leg warmer up until row 23(havnt done 23 yet). i have pretty thick calves i guess, cuz there is NO WAY i will be able to wear them if i finish & sew them with your original instructions. do you have any suggestions for me to add to it so they fit me?the only place as of now they will close is the bottom 14 dc stitches(from the ankle up). I really dont want them to be bunchy. i really like the original look in your picture.help!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Just keep adding rows after R23 until you can wrap them around comfortably. You want them to be snug, but not uncomfortably so. Then finish with the instructions from R24. Good luck!

  38. I want to make these taller for a over the knee look, does it matter how much i add to my fondation? I wasn't sure since they have the pelretty edge if it should be done in 2s or 3s, i dont want to mess up my edge at the end and need to redo them. Sorry, i have only been doing these a few months now & taught myself in a learn as i go way, lol.
    Thank you so much

  52. Love these and can't wait to make some! The weather in Florida is going to start cooling down (I hope) and I'm not ready to commit to wearing long pants. They look great with heels!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Very nice, I am making these right now :) Almost finished the first one and have a question: they look and feel great around the ankle but too tight around the calve. So I wonder if I should add one or two "half rows" on one side, what do you think? (I'm a beginner and don't have experience with fitting pieces yet... I'm also thinking it might be okay by stretching it a lot, but not sure...) Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Love these! I've made both leg warmers and just have a question on sewing the edges together. Did you sew along the edges of the shells or the row just behind?

    ReplyDelete

Am I the only one with FAT LEGS?? - LOL

    1. Rosalie, I also have "fat legs", I put it in like that because my husband says that's what real women legs look like. lol. Anyhow i was commenting because I am making a pair to go around my leg braces, and my legs just keep repeating Row 22 til you get it big enough to go around your leg.

  63. LOVE these legwarmers, so chic... I thought perhaps I had not gotten the entire pattern when I had no direction on closing the legwarmer together but after reading the above comments I see I just have to sew them up, simple as can be. They are super easy and fast to make up and I just adore them. I am making a pair for my elderly mother because her legs are always cold and my sister and I thought legwarmers would be useful to her. So glad I found this quick and easy pattern, Thank you so much. I agree if one MAKES AND SELLS an item it is only COMMON COURTESY to give credit to the Pattern maker and source. It is ignorant and rude to take credit for designing an item especially when someone out there is kind enough to share such terrific patterns and ideas with the Crocheting world. Thank you for sharing with the rest of us Crocheters and pray that those who use your patterns will give you due credit.

Thanks so much for sharing your pattern, it's greatly appreciated!!!

  65. How do I join the seems together?

    ReplyDelete
  66. I joined the seams by stitching three straight edge to row 23 (just before the shells). A good tip is consist stitching the straight edge to the other at an angle so the warmers will be tighter around the ankles, depending on the look you're after.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I made these for a friend to give as a gift. The recipient loved them.!! I made them in black and used white for the shell edge. I have had many requests for more. Thank you for the free pattern. Despite the pattern not mentioning sewing the edges, it was rather obvious. No need to critisize the pattern owner.

  70. I love these leggings. I have found that row 2-22 are the exact same as row 23 so I think that row 23 is the row where you attach the two sides together. I'm not sure but that's the way it looks.
